Tax benefits for donating stock

For stock that is held for a minimum of one year and has increased in value, there are two key tax benefits from donating stock: 

  1. If you itemize deductions, you can claim a charitable deduction equal to the stock’s fair market value, and

  2. You don’t pay the capital gains tax that you would have to pay if you sold the stock.
